The High School report was presented by Dave King.

  • School closing or delays due to inclement weather conditions:  The superintendent decides when to close school; thought and consideration is always exercised when the safety of students and staff are in question.  The local television networks are notified (ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX) who then notify their radio station affiliates.  Closing or school delay announcements are usually made during the 5:00 a.m. broadcasts. Several networks also have the ability to send you an automated text message when they receive the closing notification.  In the event you have questions regarding the cancellation of athletic events, check the website (www.chagrinschools.org) or contact the AD Office direct line 247-2890 or 247-2072 xt. 4447.
  • Surrogate Parents NeededDistricts are required to provide surrogate parents for students with disabilities who are in foster placements.  We no longer have a certified Surrogate Parent in our district and would like to recruit some parents for training.  We typically do not have many children who require this service; however, we need to be prepared in the event that a surrogate parent is needed.  Training sessions are free and are offered the first Wednesday of every month in Valley View.  If you would like more information regarding this rewarding service, please contact Dr. Christine A. Jackson, Director of Pupil Services, at 440.247.4564 or Christine.Jackson@chagrinschools.org.
  • College Goal Sunday 2010:  Sunday, February 14, 2010, has been determined to be “College Goal Sunday”.  This is a financial aid workshop.  The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators sponsors this workshop.  This free workshop attempts to answer your questions related to financial aid and will walk you through the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  This workshop is for the parents of seniors planning on going to college next year.  Seniors may also want to attend with their parents.  Since there are changes from year to year, underclass parents are not encouraged to attend.
  • To register, go to www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or call 1.877.428.8246.
  • Student Scheduling:  The Counselors will be meeting with each individual student to schedule courses for the 2010-2011 school year during the month of February:  Juniors on February 2nd and 3rd, Sophomores on the 4th and 5th, Freshmen on the 8th and 9th, and 8th graders in family conferences from the 16th to 24th.  The new “Course Selection Guide” will be distributed in January for students and parents to consider coursework and discuss plans.
  • The Tiger of the Semester Award is presented to students who exemplify a positive attitude, work ethic and service to fellow students and teachers at Chagrin Falls High School.  The ceremony is scheduled for January 26 at 7:15 a.m. in the PAC Foyer (by invitation).
  • Principal Academic Awards – Principal Academic Awards will be announced within the next week.

They are as follows:

PRINCIPAL’S ACADEMIC DISTINCTION AWARD

Grades 9 – 11 (per semester)

Academic Distinction/Academic Merit Awards shall be based on all subjects in which a student is enrolled and grades will be weighted accordingly.  In determining Academic Distinction, any grade below a B- (including Honors) disqualifies students from this honor.

Principal’s Academic Distinction  -  4.0 semester GPA

Incompletes eliminate students from consideration for recognition

PRINCIPAL’S ACADEMIC MERIT AWARD

Grades 9 -12(per semester)

In determining Academic Merit Award, any grade below a C- (including Honors) disqualifies students from this honor.

Principal’s Academic Merit Award 3.5 Semester GPA.

Incompletes eliminate students from consideration for an Academic Merit Award.

PRINCIPAL’S ACADEMIC SCHOLAR AWARD

The Principals’ Academic Scholar Award will be awarded at the end of the 6th academic semester for students who attain a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher.  This is a display of persistent academic achievement and awarded to those students who did not qualify for Cum Laude Society induction after the 6th semester.  This award does signify a sequential step in working towards acquiring Cum Laude recognition.  Students who remain diligent with their studies have one semester remaining to try to acquire Cum Laude induction which represents the top 20% of the class.

  • CUM LAUDE SOCIETY

Each Chapter may elect student members not more than 20% of the graduating class who have  academic excellence in the college preparatory curriculum, choosing:

The whole number awarded toward the end of the senior year, or up to 10% of the number at the end of the junior year or early in the senior year, and the remainder near the end of the Senior Year.”

Chagrin Falls High School PTO News

The High School report was presented by Wendy Pierce.

  • Thank you to the PTO Volunteers who helped with the Vision and Hearing Screening.  We had 7 Moms who were able to be there.  They screened all the freshman during the lunch periods on December 1, 2009.
  • Thank you to Julie Andrews who organized the Holiday Luncheon for teachers and staff.  A special thanks to all the PTO volunteers who provided food and drinks for the event.
  • Liz Dworak requested a few volunteers to help assemble the sports awards for the High School Fall Sports Award Banquet.  Liz was very appreciative and wrote “that all three ladies were such a big help and very enthusiastic with wanting to help with this very large project for Lenny and Bob in the athletic office.”

Bingo Night is Friday, January 29. This is the high school’s major fundraiser.  Kelly Clegg is organizing the evening and we look forward to a good turnout.  Please encourage your Gurney and Intermediate School Students to attend.  It is always a fun event.
