• Donna Ludwig coordinated the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon which took place in the Sands Community Room on May 6^th.  Thanks to all the volunteers who donated food to make it a special event for our teachers.
• On behalf of Dr. Koons and all the teachers at the high school, the section reps would like to thank the PTO Financial Planning and Research Committee for its generous disbursement to the high school.  Thanks to the hard work of many, the high school art, math and chemistry classrooms are receiving new equipment for student use this fall.
• From the high school counseling department, Karen Lewis will attend a workshop this summer to learn more about the Naviance Family Connection software currently available to CFHS students.  This online program helps students and parents access college and career information. The counseling department’s continuing exposure to the Naviance Family Connection program will benefit parents and students as they move through the college application process.
• In addition to using the Naviance system, the section reps thought it might be helpful for a group of senior parents to work with the counseling department and form a “parent’s advisory committee.”  This committee would pass along current information and advice to junior parents.
• Next year’s high school head section rep will be Mary Donley.  She will be joined by Yvonne King, Laurie McCormack, Cindi  Munday, and Mary Jo Weber.

• Grading practices – handout was distributed regarding NCA commendations and required actions as well as discussion items regarding grading practices.  These grading practices any any possible changes are being thoughtfully considered and will be presented to Board of Ed for vote in May.
• Drug Dogs – a letter will go out to all high school parents explaining procedure and protocol

• Parent/Teacher conferences were held last week at the high school.  PTO section reps provided “grab and Go’ snack bags for the teachers.  Thanks to Section Rep Gwen McCuaig for coordinating.
• High School Section Reps will work with Middle School Section Reps to set a date for Teacher Appreciation Day.  We will look at the first week of May.
• PTO Section reps will provide manpower for spring events including Your Life/Your Choice at Parkside Church on April 26 from 10-2:30, and Senior Project Showcase, June 1 from 10-1.

The football team gave the whole town a jolt by making it to the State Championship game again this year. Can't wait for next season!

• Tiger Rewards – A program to reward good deeds beyond the norm will continue until Christmas. Student s and staff receive free ice cream or a gift card.
• Tennis Team – We clapped out the tennis team as they headed off to the state tennis meet. Our next clap out will feature the drummers marching through the halls.
• We are CVC champions in Girls Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer and Football
• Football dinner – Parents of the senior football players will be holding a banquet at the Bertram on December 5.
• Message Board-Concern has been raised as to what goes on the message board. We try to place messages about students or activities that are not in the calendar. For example, “Congratulations Greg Singer Chagrin Valley Rotary Entrepreneurial Award Recipient.”
• Cabaret -The middle school cafeteria was the scene of the choir Cabaret, a night of entertainment provided by students from grades 7 – 12.
• Powder Puff – No one organized Powder Puff this year.
• Video Announcements – We are testing video announcements provided by our Video Productions class.
• CVC Sportsmanship -We sent five students to Orange for the annual CVC sportsmanship event.
• Eagle Scouts-Senior Dan Driscoll and Jon Van Wagoner received their Eagle Scout award earlier this month.
• Academic Letter -We are considering awarding an academic letter to students. Also, looking into Honor role. School wishes to provide some sort of consistent, easy to understand academic award system.
• PLAN – Sophomores took the PLAN, the practice ACT.
• Veterans Day – We hosted twelve veterans for lunch after the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Triangle.
• Bloodmobile – Christine Deighan and the student council held another successful Bloodmobile.
• Ursuline College – We sent twelve girls to leadership training at Ursuline taught by the Boy Scouts.
• Fall Play – Father Knows Best (presented in November)
• Chinese teachers and Mr. Hunt in China visited China
• Academic Forum – twenty teachers attended the annual dinner at Hawken School. This annual event is a wonderful forum for sharing of ideas, including curriculum, within and among schools. Helpful from a best practices standpoint.

• Communication: Want High School News? Check out monthly electronic newsletter, PTO website, (www.chagrinfallspto.org) and PTO general meetings, (third Wednesday of the month, Sands Community Room, 7:30 pm) Dr. Koons attends every PTO general meeting.
• Volunteers: Thank you Franny Ross for coordinating the conference meal on Tuesday, November 16 and to our 15 hospitality volunteers who provided food.

• Graduation Seating – We will probably keep the stadium closed until 10:00 a.m. on graduation Sunday to reduce people being shut out of seating due to blankets being placed earlier in the week.

• Leadership Selection-

o   Sophomore Lauren Lang was selected to be the Hugh O’Brian Award outstanding sophomore leader.  Previous recipients were Ted Cogan, Jimmy Boldt and Ms. Anderson.  Lauren will spend a weekend at the University of Mount Union with other Hugh O’Brian leaders from Ohio.

o   Selected for Look Up to Cleveland was junior Olivia Kuenzi.  Olivia will now compete to be one of the fifty-five students from Cuyahoga County for this leadership program for juniors.  Previous recipients were Kathryn Mahoney and Matt Owen.

o   Selected for Leadership Geauga were juniors Katy Klespies and Emily von Wagoner.  Katy and Emily will meet monthly with students from the other schools in Geauga County.  Previous recipients were Brooke Kratche and Dan Driscoll, Bobby Winkelman, Kaitlin Wolfe and Mr. Brownlow’s son.

o   Selected to compete for the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce scholarship were Brooke Kratche, Greg Singer and Sam Hollyer.  These three will compete against other high school students from the Chagrin Valley for a $1,000 prize based on their entrepreneurial and business skills.

• AP Scholars-We recognized our sixteen senior Advanced Placement Scholars with Distinction.  Chagrin Falls High School had 9 national AP scholars, 52 AP Scholars with Distinction, 17 Scholars with Honors and twenty-eight AP Scholars.  The entire list is posted on the guidance office window and outside Mrs. Ennemoser’s desk.
• Suicide Prevention-We are soliciting the freshman class to get their feedback about last week’s Suicide Prevention workshop.
• Tiger Rewards-To celebrate the good start of the school year, a great homecoming parade and bonfire, and winning 150 computers, we will begin a program called Tiger Rewards.  This is to recognize people who go out of their way to do good deeds.  For example Cam Rose and Katy Klespies promoted the suicide prevention walk.  Sarah Glass and Amy Trosin promoted the walk for diabetes.  Abby Dunegan is collecting plastic caps for a free chemotherapy treatment.  Mrs. Warren went digging through the recycling containers to collect plastic caps.  This program begins Monday in the cafeteria.  A handout will explain the program.  At the bottom of the handout will be a ticket for a free ice cream from the cafeteria.  Read the handout and use the ticket to get a free ice cream on Monday ONLY.
• Fall Play and Spring Musical-Casting has begun for Father Knows Best, the fall play.  Beauty and the Beast will be the spring musical.  Both productions will be high school students only and we will not double cast the musical.
• National Merit Semi-finalists-Thomas Donley, Sarah Greenlaw and Alec Kreger were designated as National Merit Semi-finalists based on their PSAT score above 212/240.  Seven students were Commended students based on their score of 201-211/240.
• Student Council Overnight-Held at Punderson each year for student council members and the administration to get to know one another and plan the upcoming school year.
• Pray Around The Pole -About twenty kids came to pray around the flag pole on Wednesday, September 22.
• Student Pictures-Occurred September 23.  Club pictures were October 12, staff development day. Information available through Ripcho Studios.
• Homecoming-Hall of Fame, Bonfire, parade, game, dance all went well.  The next election might be through Naviance.
• Marijuana incidents involving high school students were discussed.
• PSAT-Wednesday, October 13 for sophomores and juniors.  Freshmen had the annual Expect Respect assembly.  Seniors will sleep in and then took their script “11” picture.

• Thirty high school parents signed up to be PTO volunteers.  They will assist with a variety of duties including, hospitality, fundraising, welcoming, special projects, office and clinic help.  These volunteers will be providing food for the November parent-teacher conferences and we thank them!
• PTO volunteers on the welcome committee greeted 14 new high school families with phone calls earlier this month.  The PTO welcome mentors will follow up with the new families throughout the year to see how they and their children are adjusting and to answer any questions.
• The PTO presented three new high school teachers with a “new teacher stipend” of $50 to assist them in setting up their classrooms.  The three new teachers are Jody Guerini, Jeffrey Womack, and David Arundel.
• This year’s high school fundraiser is the annual Bingo Night scheduled for Friday, January 21 from 6-9 pm in the middle school gym.  Kelley Clegg is the chairperson and her committee will meet soon to begin planning the event.  All the money raised at Bingo Night goes directly to the” high school building fund” to be used for PTO-approved grant requests.  The money finds its way back into the classroom in the form of equipment, supplies and materials to improve student learning.

It is always nice to see such good news when you drive by the school. Congratulations on making the semi-finals!

It’s time to re-register your school choice with the Heinen’s Reward Program!  Heinen’s begins collecting your shopping credits this week and will use your total from now through April to determine how much they will donate to Chagrin Falls Schools.  1% of every dollar you spend in their stores will be donated to our schools.  Everyone must register their cards EVERY year.  Click the image or here to visit the Heinen’s Rewards page now.  If you are already registered with their program, log in.  Go to “Update My Profile” in the upper right corner.  On the Profile Page, scroll to the bottom section on the ABC School Donation Program.  There is a drop down menu to select a city and then a school.  Update the page and you are done for the year!

Giant Eagle also has a program to contribute a percentage of your purchases to local schools.  You can register for it online at Giant Eagle’s Apples for Students page – and if you happen to have a Target VISA card, you can register that to a school of your choice as well.  There are a number of options that can financially support local schools through the expenses you already incur – and the list of these opportunities seems to grow every day.  Check back at our site for information on new programs like these.  We’ll post them if we find them and explain exactly how they work.  As always, contact us with any questions you may have.
